As Special As It Gets

Is there a special way to say thank you where you are from?

My Northwest daughter is getting used to "Thanks, y’all," coming from the locals in her new home state of Mississippi.

We are feeling a lot of gratitude around here at the library, with the resounding support of this wonderful county at the polls this week.

Looking for Grant Writers in Kitsap? Me Too!

I help all kinds of nonprofits all over the county with every aspect of the nonprofit life cycle, from conception and birth to sustainability, management and leadership, boards and a treasure trove of research resources, through the library’s role as a Funding Information Network Partner of the Foundation Center of New York.

The thing I do most of all is help nonprofits find funding and all that goes with it – the proposal writing and budgeting skills, collaboration models, trends and what to do after the grant.

Kitchen Table, Anyone?

No one is making me write about our Community Conversations this month, but I have to tell you, I was totally surprised and impressed with the dynamic and heartfelt experience we had last week holding a Community Conversation with our own Poulsbo library staff. I was so moved by the authenticity of the things that were expressed there, as staff “took off their work hats” and spoke from the heart, as people who live here and care deeply about their neighbors, their town, their farm.

Reviving Childhood Pastimes in a Digital Age

I grew up with a passion for reading Encyclopedia Britannica, the alluring leather volumes (brown for adults, red for the “Junior” version) proudly on display in our living room. I especially relished every picture, every article about dog breeds and animals of all kinds. I decided being an international Zoologist would be a good career for me. Actually, becoming an Adult Services Librarian was a great fit for my lifetime curiosity about, well, pretty much everything.

Mysteries with a Science Fiction Twist for your Next Reading Cocktail

Are you a Sci Fi fan, but ready for a new twist in your reading? Are you an avid Mystery reader, but looking for something a little different – but not TOO different?  “Genreblending” between Science Fiction and other genres isn’t new, but it’s a lot bigger now and offers just the right mix for some people, whether as a temporary diversion or a newly discovered passion. Science Fiction and Fantasy have been together a long time, but want to try Sci Fi and Mystery? Read on!

The Right Mystery for You Awaits

People who don’t read mysteries sometimes think they are all alike. Nothing is worse than looking forward to that new mystery, and getting home to read, only to find it’s not “your kind of mystery” at all! Horrors! Not even worth trying. No way.

We in libraryland have ways of describing the different types of mysteries to help you find just what you want. If you run out of everything by an author you love, we can help you find authors from the same kind of mystery appeal. My favorite is a reference book called “Genreflecting”, by Diana Tixier Herald.
