Public input is leading to real changes at your library. Below are quotes from library patron Vision 2010 surveys and a list of a few of the resulting changes already underway at the library.
Initiative 1 - Optimum Access
“Hours, Hours, Hours. Need to be open more often. Nights and weekends please.” New Library hours will be initiated on April 1st ’06. Additional 27.5 hours offered each week.
“The general public has no idea about the wealth of services KRL provides.”
Pro-active communication efforts are underway, look for a new e-Newsletter in
fall ’06.
“I think classes for those that are embarrassed about computers would be an opportunity.” click! Computer Training for computer novices has been developed with the help of library volunteers.
Initiative 2 – Outstanding Collection & Service
“I would like to find more current titles in music & movies.” Books2Go collection of just released trade-paperback literary titles was revealed in August ’05 with overwhelming success. Plus DVD collection budget has been increased.
“I would like to see more activities for children at different days and times.” Additional Children’s Librarian position added in ’05, along with increases in evening and weekend children’s activities.
“It is crucial for the library to remain as accessible as possible to people of all ages, cultures and economic groups.” Starting in ’06, the Library will emphasize multi-cultural & multi-generational programming.
“Help students gather materials for school assignments, projects.” Additional resources for students, such as online access to live homework help, Tutor.com, will be added for the ’06 - ’07 school year.
Initiative 3 – User-focused Infrastructure
“Please work out the “bugs” with the new computer system.” Improvements to the library catalog will be made on-going, with the first major upgrade in late Spring ’06.
"Need a better website, I find it hard to use, needs to be user friendly!” KRL.org is being redesigned based upon public and staff input, launch set for Spring ’06.
“We desperately need more space!” KRL will continue to work with building owners to improve facilities. The Downtown Bremerton Library will re-open in April ’06 following a substantial renovation.
Additional things to look for:
• More new items on the shelves faster
• Self-check in/out services
• Increased Library involvement in community events/activities
• New Bookmobile with expanded routes and hours
