The Internet is a great resource. It has already changed the way we gather information, how we shop, where we invest, and even how
we gain employment. Indeed, because of time-lags inherent in traditional publishing, often the most current information is found on the Internet, and sometimes only on
the Internet.
However, along with this new medium come new responsibilities and new problems. The links below cover child safety on the
Internet:
Safe Kids has a great deal of information from many different
sources.
The American Library Association has The Librarian's Guide to Cyberspace for Parents and Kids.
Get Net Wise is another comprehensive site for Internet related issues and kids.
The
American Association of School Librarians has a site called Families Connect.
The Internet Filter Assessment Project
evaluated the effectiveness of filters.
TopTenReviews has rated several filters on their site in Internet Filter Review.
Internet Filters
Kitsap Regional Library filters access to the Internet for all children under
the age of seventeen (17). This means blocking, to the extent technically possible, those Web sites that are considered harmful to minors, or that visually depict adult-oriented or
sexually explicit material. All terminals in areas designated for children are restricted to filtered access. Parents and guardians of children under the age of seventeen (17) may request
that their children have no Internet access.
Internet Safety Policy
Filters are software programs you can place on your home computer to prevent access to sites you deem to be undesirable. They
are usually fairly inexpensive and many can be downloaded right from the Web.
