The Port Orchard Library
-
The City of Port Orchard contracted with the Kitsap Regional Library in 1964 to join forces in providing a library for the local residents. Under this contract, the City provides the library building and its maintenance and utilities while Kitsap Regional Library provides the materials, staff, and access to the resources.
-
Is one of nine branches in the Kitsap Regional Library system and is located in the heart of busy downtown Port Orchard.
-
Houses over 75,000 items including books, newspapers, magazines, videos and DVDs, music CDs, audio books and subscription-based Research Databases.
-
Includes a community meeting room that seats 20, a special teen area for young adults, and the light-filled Children's Cove which overlooks the bay.
-
Has 28 public computer terminals, wireless internet access, and areas for study and reading.
-
Offers exciting programs for adults, teens and children, including weekly baby, toddler, and preschool story times and the Ship's Log Readers, a monthly book discussion group for adults. Programs are free and everyone is welcome.
The friendly staff at the Port Orchard Library welcomes you and looks forward to serving your information needs!
Friends of the Port Orchard Library
The Friends association is registered with the State of Washington as a non-profit organization. Dues are $5.00 per year. The purpose of this group is to support the library, which is done by contributing to services and raising funds for library furnishings or activities that go beyond the scope of the Regional Library or the City's provisions. The Friends meet monthly, the third Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. to take care of business and often host a speaker at these meetings. You are always most welcome, as member or guest.
The Friends' book sale room accepts donations of used books, providing they are in good shape and of recent vintage. They do not, however, accept old text books, musty or moldy items, or large quantities at any one time.
Parking in Downtown Port Orchard
It can be frustrating finding a parking spot, especially when you are in a hurry! These hints may be of help. Please keep our neighbors happy by respecting their private parking areas. Be advised the library lot is reserved for staff, permits are required, and parking tickets may be incurred.
Free two-hour parking is allowed:
- on Bay street
- three spaces on the side street directly south of the library
Free four-hour parking can be found:
- in the first parking row directly east of the library
- in the lot across Bay street west of the library, behind Myhres Cafe
- one section in the lot west of Frederick Street - be sure to park in the correct section, however, as most of that lot is pay or marina parking
Handicapped parking
- one space on the street south of library, the slot in front of the stop sign
- two spaces across the street in the lot behind Myhres Cafe
Loading zone
- right in front of the library's front door
It is meant for short stops only, ideal for returning library materials in the book drop, dropping off or picking up someone. Daily, between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., this zone is used by the library courier to deliver and pick up library materials. |
