The Emotional Toll of Emotions: Helping Children Understand Their Feelings

I will admit it, I am inherently a pretty emotional person. As I get older, I have noticed that the moment I think I've found ways to manage my emotions and stress levels, I turn around and another heap of emotions is piled on in a seemingly never-ending cycle. With constant stressors like finances, job security, world affairs and the in's and out's of everyday life, you may feel like you are constantly overcoming one obstacle after another.  How does one break that cycle? Well, I have yet to discover a magic Stress-A-Way spray or a guard to keep the emotions at bay.

Get Messy This Summer—With Bubbles!

Add bubble fun to your summer and learn about surface tension and evaporation at the same time. Last month, I tried a new bubble solution recipe that called for sugar. Now, you can get some fun bubbles from combining water with dishwashing liquid. Adding a little bit of sugar and letting the solution sit overnight leads to big, long-lasting bubbles! Plus, the bubble mixture was just right for blowing bubbles inside other bubbles. Sound impossible?

Preventing Summer Slide

Summer Learning has begun and all of the Youth Services Librarians at Kitsap Regional Library have been visiting schools and getting kids and teens excited about reading and learning! There are definite incentives for reading at the library. If you read ten hours, you get a free book of your choice and a ticket to the Kitsap County Fair. If you read 100 hours, you get to pick one of our limited edition 100 hour reader t-shirts and you get your picture on our Facebook page.

Kitsap Farmers Markets Opening Weekend

Spring is finally here! Now is the time for planting seeds. If digging in the dirt isn't your thing, what about supporting our local economy? Local farmers grow amazing food in our neck of the woods. You can meet many of them at farmer's markets around the county, almost every day of the week!  Two markets open this weekend, with others to follow shortly after.

Below is a list of local markets with their dates and times courtesy of their websites.

Staff Picks: 2016 Best Books for Kids and Teens

This is the time of year when I dig into “best of the year” lists. Whether it’s to compare, catch up, or to discover a missed gem, it’s a great way to reflect on the good things that happened in 2016.  As a super-fan of books for kids and teens I always want to find out and share out what’s great.  I’ve gathered some great recommendations from the best resource around, Kitsap Regional Library staff, and included professional book critic’s lists of the year too. Cheers to this year’s best books for kids and teens!
