Every Year, Head to KRL for Summer Reading

The goal of the KRL Summer Reading Program is to combine fun with literacy.

Children and teens can sign up for the Summer Reading Program at any KRL branch. They will receive a "tracker" they can use to log their reading hours for the summer.

If they read or are read to for at least 10 hours before the program ends, they will successfully complete the program and be eligible to receive a free book (paid for by the Kitsap Regional Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library) and a free ticket to the Kitsap County Fair and Rodeo.

Every KRL branch library offers a full slate of special programs for children and teens throughout the summer. You can see the upcoming programs here. Or, you can download a copy of the summer events calendars for Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Central Kitsap, North Kitsap and South Kitsap. (2012 events calendars coming in April.)

Why 10 hours?

Doesn't seem like much considering you have all summer to do it. But extensive educational research has found that 10 hours of reading during the summer can help assure that a child maintains the reading grade level she has achieved during the school year. Less reading during the non-school months means your child can regress in reading skills. So 10 hours is time well spent, especially if you get a free book and a free ticket to the Fair out of it.

A Major Commitment by KRL to the Children of Kitsap

Kitsap Regional Library devotes considerable time, resources and energy to the Summer Reading Program because of the importance of summer reading to a child's continuing literacy. We're proud to make this commitment to meet the needs of our county's young people and we want to make participation in the program as fun for them as it is academically helpful.
