BOOKMOBILE SERVICES

Bookmobile Services are offered primarily in rural areas of Kitsap County that are farthest from the system's nine physical branch libraries.

KRL's Bookmobile, "Violet," a branch library on wheels, makes more than 30 stops every two weeks (see the current Bookmobile schedule) in different areas of Kitsap County. The mobile branch is open to the public almost 70 hours per month.

Bookmobile service includes:

  • Books for readers of all ages
  • Audio Books and DVDs
  • Current magazines
  • A place to pick up holds
  • A place where you can obtain a library card

The normal KRL due dates of 1 week/3 weeks do not apply to items checked out from the Bookmobile. Because Violet's schedule is based on a two-week rotation, items checked out are due in 2 weeks/4 weeks. Items that are checked out from the Bookmobile may be returned to any other KRL branch. Items checked out from other branches may be returned to the Bookmobile.

BOOKMOBILE HISTORY at KRL

Kitsap Regional Library’s first bookmobile, Molly, began operations in May 1947, making nine runs every two weeks. When a second bookmobile, “Little Chief” was purchased in 1954, Molly was reserved for school runs. The names were chosen by children via a contest.

The two original KRL bookmobiles were later replaced by "Buttercup," a yellow van that was purchased with grant money. It was in use from 1982-2008.

A major fundraising effort by the KRL Foundation in 2008 led to the purchase of the system’s current mobile branch, nicknamed “Violet.” Bookmobile patrons increased from 375 in June 2008 to 540 in June 2009 after Violet took over the run.
