Cozy fantasies are defined by an atmospheric setting containing fantastical elements—magic, fantasy creatures, paranormal or occasionally science fiction elements, often drawn from or inspired by myths, legends, or folklore—along with a slower paced plot, a focus on characters and their relationships to others (familial, friendly, or romantic) with lower stakes conflicts driving the action, and a tone that leans feel-good or hopeful. Leaving the grand battles and fraught betrayals behind, cozy fantasy books use emotional narratives to drive the story, with characters often struggling to find their place in the world or to overcome lingering trauma. These stories share many elements with upbeat fiction and cozy mysteries: a strong focus on place and community, an endearing and sometimes quirky cast of characters, with little to no gore, on-page violence, explicit sex, or language.
