Women's History Month

Celebrate Women's History Month

In 1978, an educational group in Santa Rosa, California, set aside a week to publicly celebrate women’s achievements in American history. The year after, the movement spread as communities across the country celebrated Women’s History Week. In 1980, at the request of the National Women’s History Project, President Jimmy Carter formally designated the week of March 8th, in honor of International Women’s Day, to serve as National Women’s History Week to honor “the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America”. Seven years later, Congress passed a law extending the celebration to a full month, and since 1995, each U.S. President has proclaimed March as Women’s History Month.
