The hopes of thousands of organizers were finally realized on July 26, 1990, when, after decades of effort, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. The passing of the ADA was a watershed moment for civil rights, officially prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of public life. Now each July, we celebrate the work, communities, and achievements of those with disabilities. The 2026 theme is “The World Works Better With Us,” and states, “When people with disabilities are included, respected, and supported, communities work better for everyone.
