Each year, we work with all public schools in Kitsap County to invite their third-graders on an introductory field trip to the Kitsap Regional Library. This experience has become a rite of passage for third-graders and for many of them, it is their first time at the Library.

The Adventure Begins...

The adventure begins with a school visit from one of our local librarians. This is the first step in building a relationship between students and the Library. In this visit, the librarian will give an overview of the upcoming tour, bolster excitement for the field trip and answer initial questions about the Library, resources, programs, or anything else that comes up during that time.

Shortly after, students will be taken to their local Library to experience it first-hand. Guided by their librarian, students will tour the front end of the Library and gain a sneak peek at what happens behind the scenes.

An Empowering Experience

Providing easy access to resources and support for young learners is an integral part of the work we do at the Library and “To the Library” is a key part of that education. By inviting third graders in for a one-on-one tour, we hope to educate them on the resources available and to empower students to become lifelong learners with support from their local Library.

In completing their To the Library tour, each student will be provided with Library access (either through their own Library Card, or a Student Library Account depending on the school district), a gift bag full of goodies including their own free book to take home, a thorough understanding of the Library itself and the resources available to them therein.

Something Super

Research shows that third grade is a critical point in a child’s education. Learning to read proficiently (and discovering a lifelong love of reading) is a milestone at this age that impacts the successful continuation of a student’s educational career. Because of this, To the Library was designed to support and empower students in reaching that milestone, with the help of the Library and community partners.

Our Heroes

To the Library experience is critical in sparking a student’s passion for reading. This program couldn’t be done without the continued support and partnerships within our community and we’d like to take a moment to thank the heroes that help make this happen.

To the Library is made possible through support from Kitsap County school districts and the generous support from our partners: the Kiwanis Club of Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Port Orchard, Poulsbo, South Kitsap; proceeds from Kitsap Uncensored and the Kitsap Regional Library Foundation. Thank you.
