A New Library for Port Orchard
For over 100 years, a library has been nestled in the heart of Port Orchard. Serving its community members as a place to read and be, a hub for connection and gathering, and so much more, the Port Orchard branch is one of the busiest locations in the Kitsap Regional Library system.
Originally retrofitted from an old post office building in 1984, Port Orchard’s current library location on Sidney Ave is outdated, with structural challenges and limitations. The rigid design does not provide the flexible spacing that modern libraries need to support reading, family interactions, teen spaces, program areas, and access to free community meeting rooms.
As part of the process to revitalize downtown Port Orchard, the library will be a cornerstone of the future Port Orchard Community Event Center. In collaboration with the City of Port Orchard and Kitsap Public Facilities District, this 24,000 square foot facility will provide a central gathering place and multi-purpose facility in downtown Port Orchard and support a multitude of functions for local and regional use, including a new library.
The new library will include
Flexible spaces to accommodate different learning styles, group needs, and activities.
Outdoor spaces that will be utilized for programming, incorporating the natural environment.
Expanded meeting spaces will serve the diverse needs of the region.
Larger and better-designed areas for families, kids, and teens.
The views of Sinclair Inlet invite people in and encourage them to stay.
